"30 for Sam" is back (plus four)
Sam Weis was a vivacious 31-year-old who had to fight leukemia on and off for eight years. During healthy years, Sam liked to nordic ski his new age in kilometers each year on his birthday, which is January 15th. During his last two years of life, Sam's treatment made him unable to carry on the ski-your-age-in-kilometers tradition, so his friends and supporters took on the challenge on his behalf and called it #3xforSam
Thanks to many of YOU, #30forSam, #31forSam, #32forSam and #33forSam were all huge successes. When Sam was turning 30 and 31, all the activities brought a smile and sense of community while he dealt with cancer treatment. (Click here to see his blog post in gratitude). Though Sam's earthy days have come to an end, I know he'd be proud to see us all carrying on this healthy tradition in his memory.
And now, there's another way to participate...

In 2020, support the Sam Weis Memorial Scholarship with your #34forSam
Since we can't bring a smile to Sam's face with our #34forSam activities this year, let's bring one to someone else's. Sam's parents have been longtime donors to a scholarship for a student from Rhinelander High School, Sam's alma matter. This year, the scholarship has been re-named the "Sam Weis Memorial Scholarship." Let's raise some money for a few RHS students to put toward college!
Or: mail a check to 2901 Klamath Drive, Anchorage, AK 99517 or Venmo me (Just make sure to write #34forSam so I know what it's for!)

Here's the summary of the scholarship:
Sam Weis was the 2004 RHS class president, voted Most Likely to Succeed, and a proud, life-long Hodag who died in May 2017 at age 31 of leukemia. Though Sam's life was cut short, he had countless accomplishments. Sam inspired those around him to pursue activities that bring happiness and work that improves the world around us.
Sam's family has named this scholarship in his honor to enable students committed to improving the welfare of others to pursue an education that leads to a meaningful career, and reminds all students to work hard, play hard, and to always seize the day.
