Well, it seems like the hell of the past couple weeks are moving into the rearview mirror for now.
Sam's blood counts are ticking their way up and his throat (and thus our spirits) is so much better. Earlier this week when he was just starting to be able to talk again, Sam cracked a joke when we were watching TV. Then it was quiet for a moment, and then he looked at me said what I was thinking, which was, "First time I've made a joke in a while, huh?" That was a milestone - and some sarcasm and silliness was a very welcome addition back to our room after over a week of stress and pain. He is still having a lot of trouble with eating, which is frustrating and leaves him really low-energy and losing weight. Still, yesterday afternoon, our nurse Wendy took a look at all our pictures and said, "you'd probably like a little time outside, huh?" It took Sam about half a second to nod his head in agreement. So we went out yesterday afternoon for a drive and tiny little walk into the arboretum. Just that much really took it out of him and he was fairly wiped for the rest of the day. That made the trip a big excitement and then admittedly, a big let down for both of us. His progress has been absolutely outstanding over the past week, but yesterday reminded us how much healing his body still has left to do. The docs say there's not much to take from the improving blood counts prognostically until the bone marrow biopsy next week, which will give us a better picture of what is really going on inside Sam's bone marrow. So we're both starting to think about what those results might bring and hoping for continued good news. In the meantime, we're hanging in 636, taking short walks, celebrating little victories, and enjoying spending time together. Hope everyone is having a nice weekend! -J&S
