Charity information in lieu of flowers...
Sam would be honored for donations to be made in his memory in lieu of sending flowers. If you decide to make a donation, please indicate on the form as you donate or comment below so we can keep track of the impact.
Here are a few causes near and dear to Sam's heart:
Here are a few causes near and dear to Sam's heart:
Clean Wisconsin: This is a nonprofit comprised of the most passionate, smart, and effective group of advocates for Wisconsin’s clean water, clean air, and natural places. The lakes, rivers, and woods of Wisconsin are where Sam fell in love with the wonders of the outdoors, instilled a lifelong desire to explore, and molded his calling to spend his life's work conserving and protecting the special places so many of us cherish. Also, Clean Wisconsin happens to be the place Sam and I first met back in 2010.
The Red Cross of Southwest Wisconsin (or your local blood bank): Simply put, without the hundreds (if not thousands?) of bags of blood donated by strangers and then given to Sam, he would have been gone in 2008. The donations to the Red Cross and the Blood Bank of Alaska kept Sam and countless others alive.

The Stand for Salmon initiative: A group of Alaskan fishermen, tribes and conservationists have come together to try to update Alaska's law so that it better protects the state's unique and incredible wild salmon and trout. Sam was so enamored with the rivers here and so incredibly determined to help ensure that the decline of wild salmon runs that happened in the Pacific Northwest don't happen up in Alaska. Decisions are being made at the state level right now and in the next few years that will determine whether this unique and threatened resource can continue to provide for Alaskan families and visitors forever. If the Stand for Salmon initiative is a success, there's a high chance Alaska gets to remain the "salmon state." Sam would be honored to play a continuing role in this exciting possibility.
Give to a charity of your choosing. Sam was passionate about conservation, but also generally wanted the world to be a better, more equitable and just place. If you do pick somewhere else however, please let us know!

Celebration of life information
Sam wanted his celebration of life to be lighthearted - happy even - and community focused. He specifically asked for no one to wear black.
Watch even if you can't be in Madison on 5/22:
